we have too few words for love

If Eskimos have over one hundred words for snow, why is it we have only a single word for the most powerful, mysterious, life-changing force known to humanity?

Why do we use a single word to describe such a broad emotional range? Why the same word for what a spouse feels for a partner, a parent feels for a child, a child feels for their parent, a family feels for a pet, a best friend feels for a best friend, I feel for a burrito, a teenager feels for that first crush?

After so many sonnets, plays, songs, letters, why confine ourselves with one word? Why haven’t we created more? New words beyond lust, adore, want, idolize, need, donut, cherish? New words that actually approach the points on the spectrum of love instead of munging it all into a single, blunt four-letter word?

Anyhow, this is for you. I love you.
